Either they have it, or they don’t

How many times have you heard a coach or parent say, “You’ve either got it, or you don’t”?

They are usually talking about a kid’s hockey IQ and vision. The common belief is that players are either born with great instincts, or they aren’t.
While I agree that drive is hard to create out of thin air, hockey IQ and vision can absolutely be trained. The problem isn’t that kids can’t learn it—it’s that we aren’t teaching it.

The Problem with Current Training

Most modern skills sessions happen in a vacuum. Players practice isolated techniques without proper scaling, puck movement, or eventual pressure.
When you put these same players into a game, they freeze because they’ve never been taught  how to read the ice. They aren’t forced into decision-making scenarios enough in their skills sessions.

A Better Way: The 4-Step IQ Progression

To build true hockey IQ that actually transfers to game day, coaches need to stop running static drills. Instead, every skills session should follow a clear, 4-step progression:

Step 1: The Basic Skill – Practice the raw mechanic with no distractions (e.g., how to receive a pass + repetition ).

Step 2: The Complex Addition – Add a layer of difficulty (e.g., receive the pass on the backhand, then quickly shift to the forehand).

Step 3: The Pressure Read – Add a defender who for light pressure. Now, the player has to make a choice based on what the defender does.

Step 4: The Game Situation – Put the skill into a small-area game with real pressure and live stakes.

The Bottom Line
Hockey IQ is not a magical gift. It is the trainable ability to recognize patterns and make quick decisions. 

If we don’t force players to make decisions in training, we can’t be surprised when they look lost during games. It’s time to stop saying kids “don’t have it,” and start coaching them how to build it.
